  20. Madonna. The subject of a conference at the University of Iowa?
  21. Pop fiction's perennially wily teen sleuth NANCY DREW! Having
  22. lived on the night tables of nine-year-olds for 63 years, she
  23. turned up as the focus of lectures such as "Nancy Drew in the
  24. 1990s: A Feminist Update" and "The Secret of George and Bess:
  25. Lesbian Code in Nancy Drew Mystery Stories." The comforting news
  26. from the convening: a study examining materialism in the
  27. detective series concluded that "Nancy's role in creating a
  28. culture of consumption appears to be limited." Fourth-grade
  29. Marxists, rest easy.
