- <p> More fodder for social critics concerned that academia is
- crumbling into a heap of inane doctoral dissertations on
- Madonna. The subject of a conference at the University of Iowa?
- Pop fiction's perennially wily teen sleuth NANCY DREW! Having
- lived on the night tables of nine-year-olds for 63 years, she
- turned up as the focus of lectures such as "Nancy Drew in the
- 1990s: A Feminist Update" and "The Secret of George and Bess:
- Lesbian Code in Nancy Drew Mystery Stories." The comforting news
- from the convening: a study examining materialism in the
- detective series concluded that "Nancy's role in creating a
- culture of consumption appears to be limited." Fourth-grade
- Marxists, rest easy.
